Dr. Wayne Coghlan: Chiropractor
CHIROPRACTIC, one of the largest primary care professions in Ontario, is an evidence-informed, non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the neuro-musculoskeletal system.
Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints. Chiropractors use a combination of treatments, depending on the specific needs of the individual patient. After taking a history, performing an examination and establishing a diagnosis, a chiropractor can develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment/management plan, recommend therapeutic exercise and other non-invasive therapies, and provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling. One of the most common therapies a chiropractor uses is spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), which can comprise a variety of adjustment techniques. Specific training in SMT allows chiropractors to provide highly-skilled and precise adjustments to the vertebrae of the spine, correcting joint motion to restore proper movement and improve function. For many conditions, such as low back pain, chiropractic care is the primary method of treatment. When a multi-disciplinary approach is advisable, a chiropractor will coordinate care with other health care professionals. Where other conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical or other treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition. Chiropractic care may also be used to provide symptomatic relief for patients with chronic conditions such as:

Here is my basic approach to chiropractic health care.
Initial visit to discuss your concerns, take a detailed health history, examination to work toward a diagnosis.
- Additional tests such as x-rays may be ordered.
- Consultation with other health professions may be requested.
- A summary of your condition.
- We discuss your informed consent to treatment.
- Depending on your condition I may do an initial treatment on you.... this gives you an idea of what to expect and helps me gauge how you are likely to respond to further treatment.
- We will discuss what you can do at home to help relieve pain (if applicable).
- We review your x-rays and other testing as it is available.
- We review your expectations.
- I will offer a more detailed explanation of my findings based on your history and examination.
- We discuss a treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.
- Treatment usually involves some work on local soft tissues, manipulation and/or mobilization, often the use of laser or other healing modalities.
- Advise on home care.
- As I get to know your situation we discuss modifications to lifestyle, work habits (see tech neck, computer habits, etc.) and introduce exercise for therapeutic and long term health improvement.
- This is important. I am happy to perform hands-on treatment of massage, stretches, and adjustments... which will provide you immediate relief, yet, unless you correct underlying issues such a poor posture habits and do your therapeutic exercises, results will be temporary and we will continue to chase the problem. If, however, you put my recommendations into action by correcting your posture and doing your recovery and maintenance exercise, then treatments will help you get better and get ahead of the problem.
- We do a formal review of your progress every twelve visits.
